PHOENIX -- The Arizona Legislature is asking a federal judge to let it become a party in the federal government's challenge to Arizona's controversial immigration enforcement law.

The conservative public interest group Judicial Watch made the filing on behalf of the Legislature and argues that lawmakers should be allowed to help defend the law.

The group cites a new law that lets legislative leaders participate in efforts to defend the enforcement law against challenges.

The most controversial sections of the law were put on hold by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton.

Gov. Jan Brewer appealed that ruling.

Brewer filed a countersuit last week against the federal government for failing to control Arizona's border with Mexico.
