  • PHOENIX (AP) — A year after enacting the controversial law known as SB1070, Arizona legislators continue to line up additional measures targeting illegal immigration.

A bill introduced Monday would toughen the state's mandate that employers check the eligibility of new hires, tighten identification requirements for school enrollment and other public services, and make it a crime for someone in the United States unlawfully to drive a vehicle in Arizona.

  • PHOENIX -- The Arizona Legislature is asking a federal judge to let it become a party in the federal government's challenge to Arizona's controversial immigration enforcement law.

The conservative public interest group Judicial Watch made the filing on behalf of the Legislature and argues that lawmakers should be allowed to help defend the law.

The group cites a new law that lets legislative leaders participate in efforts to defend the enforcement law against challenges.

The most controversial sections of the law were put on hold by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton.

Gov. Jan Brewer appealed that ruling.

Brewer filed a countersuit last week against the federal government for failing to control Arizona's border with Mexico.

  • PHOENIX - A bill that would force hospitals to check a patient's citizenship status is working its way through the Senate.

SB 1405 requires patients to prove they are citizens before they receive non-emergency care.

If they can't prove it, the hospital would have to call immigration officials.

Hospitals would also have to call immigration officials on patients who receive emergency care once they're treated and stabilized.

  • PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona's protocol for three-drug injection executions has cleared another legal hurdle.

A trial judge in Phoenix had upheld the state's protocol, and a ruling by the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals turned down seven Arizona death-row inmates' appeals.

The new ruling says the state's protocol abides by standards set by the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on Kentucky's similar protocol.

And the appeals court says the state appears to be following its protocol.
